Congratulations to Geography Bee winner John Hutchinson!

John is in the fourth grade, and Caroline Koscak (seventh grade) is runner up. John will take a written test to qualify for the state bee; the state winner has the opportunity to go to Washington, DC, for the National Bee.  First place prize is a $25,000 college scholarship, $500 cash, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands.

Congratulations to PA's Poetry Out Loud Winners!

First place award goes to Whitney Baxter and first runner-up to Averie Blackmore.  Both girls did a fabulous job with their oral presentations.  Whitney (and Averie, if for some reason Whitney can't attend) will next compete in the regional competition Friday, February 15, 2013, at Oak Ridge High School in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.  State finals are scheduled for March 2, 2013, in Nashville and the national Poetry Out Loud competition is April 29 - 30, 2013, in Washington, D.C.

Results of the SGA 2nd Harvest Food Drive

With everyone’s help, PA collected approximately 3,000 pounds of food. The winners of the food drive are as follows: 1st Place–Grades 7B, 6A and 6B, who will get an ice cream party; 2nd Place–Grades 8A, 8B, and 1A; 3rd Place–Grades 12, 2A, and 2B; winners of the structure–8A, 8B, 1A. Thanks to all of you for all of your hard work!!!

PA’s 2012-2013 National Honor Society Members Inducted

The 2012-2013 National Honor Society induction took place Wednesday, November 14. The senior newly inducted into the Honor society was Rachel Allen. Juniors Andee Atkins, Averie Blackmore, Jonathan Boccarossa, Mary Margaret Bryan, Savannah Church, Grace Collins, Sterling Fooshee, Ariel Huhn, Hannah Knapp, Caleb Presley, Haley Scarbrough, Jeffrey Schoondyke, Caleb Sprouse, Carly Stoltzfus, Meredith Tallent, Jake Weaver were also inducted. These new members join current members Whitney Baxter, Abigail Eldridge, Mary Kate Ferguson, Ruth Freemon, Jonathan Hecht, Jenna Grace Hill, James Hollowell, Jonathan Prieto, Natalie Smith, Elizabeth Stillwell, Jonathan Toye, Blake Tyree, Kaitlyn Webb, Amaris White and Alexa Whitman.

Providence Academy Raises $55,000+ to Support Need-Based Scholarships with “A Knight to Remember” Dinner/Auction

  On November 2, Providence Academy presented “A Knight to Remember,” a dinner/auction at the Holiday Inn, raising more than $55,000 to support the school’s need-based Annual Scholarship Fund.
   
  The event—which included a buffet dinner and more than 250 silent and live auction items—also featured musical entertainment by Providence Academy students, including a performance by 3rd Grade student, Carson Peters, who is a renowned violinist/fiddler.
 
  Among the items auctioned was a private jet vacation weekend for four to Nashville to see the Titans, the Predators, and the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular.  Other special items included student-created artwork of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, a marriage enrichment Caribbean cruise, a Pat Summitt autographed basketball, a handmade school spirit quilt, and a framed page from a 400-year-old Bible.

PA Secondary Students Looking Forward to Fall Class Trips

Eighth graders will tour the D-Day Memorial, Charlottesville, Lexington, and the Natural Bridge in Virginia October 4-5.

Seniors will be in Europe October 17 – 26, visiting Italy, Switzerland, and England.

Sophomores will enjoy the Creation Museum October 25 - 26.

Juniors will travel to Richmond and Washington, D.C., October 31- November 3.

All of these trips provide fabulous learning experiences outside the classroom—and are fun times to enjoy as a class too.

Grandparent Academy 2012 Scheduled for September 28

Grandparent Academy will take place in the Providence Academy gymnasium Friday, September 28, 9:00 a.m. - 10:20 a.m. Presentations will be made by the Elementary grades and the entire Secondary student population.  Grandparents may visit briefly with their Secondary grandchildren after the presentation, before the students return to their classes. In addition, grandparents have the opportunity to check out their Elementary grandchildren from their classrooms for the remainder of the day.

PA Takes Second Place in the Earning for Learning Contest!

Thanks to everyone who helped us take second place in the contest and win $6,500 for PA. Many families brought their receipts to the customer service desk, and many families spent $2 per mall gift card to get triple points.  The $6,500 prize is a great way to multiply the return on our time and our $2 mall gift card investments.

Secondary Service Day Coming September 21!

PA students in grades 9-12 will be completing service projects at local ministries on Friday, September 21. Ninth graders will go to Good Samaritan Ministries, tenth graders to  Doe River Gorge, juniors to Rise Up!, and seniors to Small Miracles. Seventh and eighth grades students will have morning classes, followed by a special World View seminar with Bryan College speakers. We look forward to this day to increase our Christian impact on our local communities.

2012 Christian Storytelling Festival

The award winning singing family, The Isaacs, will headline the 2012 Christian Storytelling Festival. Lily Isaacs, the matriarch of the multi-award winning group, will be the featured storyteller at the 2012 Christian Storytelling Festival. Lily will share the multi-generational story of The Isaacs starting with her parents, two Jewish concentration camp survivors during World War II. Lily’s family testimony will be followed by a concert featuring her multi-award winning family!

The Isaacs are a multi-award winning family group, who began singing 30 years ago. The vocalists are Lily Isaacs, Ben Isaacs, Sonya Isaacs, and Rebecca Isaacs Bowman. Playing their own acoustic instruments and joined by other band members, The Isaacs have a unique style that blends tight family harmony with contemporary acoustic instrumentation that appeals to a variety of audiences. Their musical influences immerge from all genres of music including bluegrass, rhythm and blues, folk, country, contemporary acoustic, and southern gospel. They perform frequently at The Grand Ole Opry, are active members on the Gaither Homecoming Videos and Concert Series, and travel throughout the year performing nationally and internationally.

PA Honors the Class of 2012

The Providence Academy graduation exercises included speeches by Valedictorian Trinity Huhn and Salutatorian Christopher Boccarossa. In addition, all the graduates were honored in the Reflections video presentation and the class tribute given by Class President Whitney Palmeter. School Administrator Jerry Williams presented the Class of 2012 to the hundreds of relatives and friends attending.

Providence Academy Graduation Scheduled for Friday, May 11

The Providence Academy 2012 Graduation Ceremony will be held May 11, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. in the school gymnasium.  Guest speaker, Pastor Mark Harrod of Trinity Baptist Church in Jonesborough will present the main address.  Class valedictorian, Trinity Huhn, and salutatorian, Christopher Boccarossa, will also present their speeches as part of the ceremony.  The public is invited to attend.

PA Students Take First and Second Place in the Northeast Tennessee Regional Stock Market Game

Six students from Providence Academy finished first and second place in the Northeast Tennessee Regional Stock Market Game recently held in Johnson City. Congratulations to our students for their efforts and results in this annual game:

PA Eighth Grader Takes Grand Prize at the ETSU Science Fair

We offer congratulations to Victoria Kanel, who took the Grand Prize at the ETSU Science Fair for her project on Biodiesel Stability. Victoria is the daughter of Jeffrey and Sheila Kanel of Kingsport, TN. The Upper East Tennessee Science Fair is held each year in the late spring on the East Tennessee State University campus. The event is sponsored by the Johnson City Kiwanis Club and ETSU. It features approximately 400 exhibits submitted by fourth through eighth graders from approximately 40 schools in the region.

Blake Tyree won 3rd place in Category 4, Jenna Grace Hill won 2nd place in Category 4, and Cade Backus won 2nd place in Category 1. The students were recognized at a reception at the Johnson City Public Library Wednesday, April 11.

PA Students Chosen to Attend TN Governor’s School!

Congratulations to the following students:

 Ruth Freemon was selected to attend the Governor's School for Scientific Exploration of Tennessee Heritage at ETSU.
 
Blake Tyree was selected to attend the Governor’s School for the Humanities at the University of TN/Martin. Of 380 applicants, 72 were chosen.
 
Ruth has also been selected as an alternate to the TN Governor's School for the Sciences at the University of TN. Of 550 applicants, 74 were chosen.
 
Jonathan Hecht was chosen as an alternate to the School of Engineering at the University of TN. Of 350 applicants, 26 were chosen.
 
James Hollowell was chosen as an alternate to the School for Computational Physics at Austin Peay.
 
TN Governor’s Schools include a full scholarship from the TN Dept of Education that covers tuition, textbooks, housing, and meals. Students attending also receive college credit for courses taken; these credits are transferable.

Providence Academy Receives Sportsmanship and Hospitality Award

At Providence Academy’s last home basketball game on Friday, February 17, the Tri-Cities Basketball Officials Association with TSSAA presented Providence Academy with a plaque with the following inscription:

Exemplifies school spirit during competition and shows hospitality towards officials and visiting schools/teams throughout the season. The purpose is to stress to coaches, players, officials, and fans the vital importance of sportsmanship because it is crucial that all people understand the major role that they play and the role model that they can be for others.

Trinity Huhn Selected National Merit Finalist

Over 1.5 million students nation-wide entered the 2012 National Merit Program by taking the PSAT. Of these, 34,000 became Commended Students; 16,000 became Semi-Finalists; and 15,000 became Finalists. Also, Hannah Huffines was selected Commended Student. Our congratulations go to Trinity and to Hannah!

Hello Dolly Performances Announced for March 2 and March 3!

 

The Providence Academy Fine Arts Department would like to invite you to a musical adventure for all ages, full of music, dancing, and romance. By the end of the show, we will have you dancing and singing along with us. So, come and join us for our production of Hello Dolly on March 2 at 7pm and March 3 at 2pm and 7 pm. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students. DAR Essay Contest Winners Announced

Emily Young- 5th grade, Clara Reynolds-6th grade, and Millicent Runnels-7th grade received word this week that their essays were winners in the Ann Robertson Chapter DAR essay contest. The assigned topic for the essays was “Young America Takes a Stand: The War of 1812.” The students have been invited to the Feb. 27 meeting of DAR at the Johnson City Public Library to read their essays. Congratulations to the winners!
