NACA Soccer Tournament Results

Last week the Providence Academy Varsity Soccer team competed in the NACA National tournament in Dayton, Tennessee. The tournament consisted of 24 teams from across the United States. In pool play Providence finished 1-1. In the first match Providence defeated Virginia Christian 4-2. Merritt McKinney and Jared Grace both had two goals, while Neil Stoltzfus had two assists and Reid Smith one assist. In game two of pool play, Providence fell to Carroll 4-1. Jared Grace scored the lone goal for Providence. After Providence fell behind 2-0 early in the first half, senior striker Merritt McKinney went out with a lower back injury and did not return to the game. Providence cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal from Jared Grace with just 14 minutes remaining but could not generate any more goals.

In game 1 of Division 2 tournament play, Providence fell to Veritas Christian 2-0. Veritas, who went on to win the tournament, was a tough first round draw.  Providence had their chances to score but could not manage to finish.

In game two, Providence led a strong Grace Christian (Florida) 2-1 with just 13 minutes remaining in the match. Grace Christian managed to score 2 goals late to win the match.

In game three, Providence defeated Lake Forrest 2-1. Providence fell behind early 1-0. Merritt McKinney scored a game tying goal on an assist from Reid Smith just before the half. With 14 minutes remaining in the game, Jared Grace tapped the ball past the stretched out Lake Forrest goalkeeper. Neil Stoltzfus’ assist split two defenders and was on target for Grace to finish.

The Knights competed well in this year’s tournament. Missing senior sweeper JD Reynolds for the entire tournament and senior striker Merritt McKinney for two games was a challenge. Overall, the Knights came away with 2 victories and scored an impressive 9 goals.
